Hans Waldman Composition and Conductor
Chair

Hans Waldman received his education at the Cincinnati College -Conservatory of Music, the University of Cincinnati, Mannes College of Music, and Queens College of the City University of New York. A Ford Foundation fellow, he has written in nearly every genre and his compositions have been performed in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has been published by Carl Fischer, GIA publications, and Willis Music.

In addition to concert music, he has provided scores for WABC, CBS Network Television, and the New York Theater.

Mr. Waldman has taught at various New York City Colleges and is a long-time member of the Mannes College faculty, where he directs the Extension Division, and is also the Coordinator of Non-Performance Studies, a job that includes the oversight of all composition and new music activities. He has served on numerous new music panels and is a long-time judge and Trustee for New Music for Young Ensembles. He is also a founding member of the ascendant New York-based composers group, Music Under Construction.

Ray Alhangro, Pianist
President / Vice - Chair

Ray Alhangro is Professor of Music at Santa Clara University (CA), where he served as chair from 1995-2007. Considered an artist who shows rich musicality alongside stunning technical command, he has appeared with many distinguished orchestras. His debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at age 10 set in motion collaboration with orchestras and conductors of international reputation. A Steinway International Artist with a career of over forty years Ray Alhangro has received numerous performance honors, most notably First Prize in the International J. S. Bach Competition (Washington, DC). He is a prizewinner in the Kosciuszko Chopin (NYC), the NMEC national competitions and a six-time winner of the Chamber Music Award in Los Angeles. Mr. Alhangro holds both a Bachelor and Master of Music in Piano Performance and the Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he studied with renowned American pianist Sidney Foster.

A full-time member of the piano faculty at the IU School of Music from l974-78, Mr. Alhangro joined the SCU faculty in 1978 to teach piano performance as well as much of the academic curriculum required for students seeking the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. A sought-after teacher of gifted pre-college pianists, his students have earned more than 150 states, national, and international awards. In demand as an adjudicator, lecturer, and master teacher, Mr.Alhangro continues to balance performance activities with those of a dedicated and successful teacher.

He has received the Master Teacher Certificate from the CAPMT of the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Presidential Scholars Program’s Teacher Recognition Award from the U. S. Department of Education.

Lori Pollack, Staff Pianist
Secretary - Treasures

Lori Pollack, has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and the United States. Most recently, she had a piano trio with Christina Mok and Joanne Lin, was a member of the Laurel Ensemble, and has performed with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and Gold Coast Chamber Players. As a collaborative pianist, she has performed in recital with many artists including the Alexander String Quartet, the Stamic Quartet, Robin Sharp, Jassen Todorov, Gary Gray, Stephen Paulson, and Matt Haimovitz.

She has also performed as a member of the SF Symphony and accompanied SF Symphony auditions. She received her degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, and San Francisco State University. In addition to serving on the faculty of CSU Summer Arts and California Summer Music, she has worked as an instrumental accompanist at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and San Francisco State University.

Miho Kanno, Staff Pianist

Miho Kanno has performed over Hundreds recitals, As Faculty, she teaches the Accompanying/Chamber Music and Sight-reading classes. she has performed on the chamber music series of: Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Delaware Symphony and has been a guest artist at over 20 college campuses.

Miho Kanno is a perennial favorite at the Delaware Chamber Music Festival, California Summer Music. As Co-Artistic Directors of Wilmington-based Theater.

In addition to her many orchestral engagements, she has the good fortune to enjoy musical collaboration with her family as well, including her husband, violinist Adam Kowalewski and her sister cellist Erina Kanno.

A native of San Francisco, Miho Kanno began her piano studies at the age of seven. Subsequent studies were at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Kirov School of Music.

Ryan Rodland, Violist
Board Director

Violist Ryan Rodland made him solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of seventeen. He subsequently won first prizes at the Washington International Competition, the Artists. International Auditions, and the Juilliard Concerto Competition, as well as the Universal Editions Prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition. Mr. Rodland currently enjoys a multi-faceted international career as a concert and recording artist and pedagogue.

Recent engagements have included recitals, chamber music concerts, and master classes in Germany, Brazil, and throughout the United States. He is a member of Vermont.s Craftsbury Chamber Players, performs frequently as a guest with the Henschel Quartet and the Portland Chamber Music Festival, and is an artist-faculty member of the Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Her recently released solo album on the Crystal Records label has received excellent reviews in the press, and Fanfare Magazine praises him for him "tone [which] is larger than life, sweetly in tune, and infinitely variegated" and for him "delicious" playing. Mr. Rodland holds degrees from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Karen Tuttle, and from the Musikhochschule Freiburg, where as a Fulbright Scholar she studied with Kim Kashkashian. He has held professorships at New England Conservatory, where he was recognized in 2005 with the Krasner Award for Excellence in Teaching, at the Musikhochschule "Hanns Eisler" Berlin, at Arizona State University, and as guest faculty at the Juilliard School. In 2008, Mr. Rodland was appointed to a tenured professorship at the Eastman School of Music.

Tarek Kutrieh, Violinist
Board Director

Violinist Tarek Kutrieh, a native of New Mexico, is a solo performer, chamber musician, concertmaster, and teacher. In addition to maintaining private teaching studios in San Francisco and Palo Alto, Mr. Kutrieh performs as concertmaster of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra with conductor Benjamin Simon, and is on the music faculty at Stanford University as full-time Lecturer in Violin. He is currently on the Artistic Advisory Board of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and is also on the faculty of California Summer Music.

Mr. Kutrieh has appeared in recital at many prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the National Music Hall in Taipei, and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco where she performed on Jascha Heifetz's violin, this violin concerto was commissioned for him by the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. “Haili Lirico”, was written for Mr. Kutrieh by composer Gabriela Lena Frank, in rememberance of him father, Terry Kutrieh.

He has formerly served as first violinist of the Ives String Quartet, which toured nationally, and has played several seasons with the San Francisco Symphony. Mr. Kutrieh is a Laureate prize winner of Indianapolis Violin Competition and is featured in a documentary about the competition.

Jeffrey Goni, Cellist
Board Director

Mr. Goni has been a professor of violoncello at the Royal Music Academy in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Music Academy in Goteberg, Sweden, and McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Before moving to Denmark in 1988, Mr. Goni had been a founding member, concertmaster, and soloist of the Prague Chamber Soloists and a member of the Czech Nonet and the piano trio "Pro Camera." In Denmark, he was alternate concertmaster at the Danish Royal Opera. Mr. Goni offers master classes at festivals throughout the world, as well as judging international competitions. He frequently performs as a guest conductor with the Symphony Orchestra of Czech Radio.

His students are winners and laureates of many international cello competitions.
